Oturu School Swimming Pool Upgrade

Five of our Club members completed the emptying, cleaning and repainting of the school swimming pool in two and a half days – a marathon effort!

The pool had lain idle for 12 months while the old buildings were demolished and the children were getting anxious as to when they would be able to again enjoy swimming – hence our visit in October. During the downtime, contractors had used the pool to clean their equipment so while pumping out the 100,000 litres of pea green water, we removed over a dozen  wheel barrows of sludge, tree branches and yes, nails! By the end of the first day the pool was all but empty. The next day we started the painstaking process of water blasting – two machines and a coating of blue green paint flakes everywhere! By mid afternoon it was clean, the weather gods had been kind so the surface was dry! So out with the rollers and we were able to complete two coats by lunchtime on the third day.

It took the ‘crew’ several days to get over the stiff limbs and blue paint - the children are delighted – their letter of thanks says it all “Our Board of Trustees, staff and especially our tamariki are so grateful for their new and improved pool. We wouldn’t want to go through another summer without cooling off, learning water safety and developing our swimming skills”
